2018 Year In Review

Well it seems we are back from the dead! Not one to fall behind trends, we’ve been busy making sure our facebook and instagram are on top of things, alas, at the expense of our wordpress it seems. Fear not, however, for all is well for the Singapore Association and we are now back with renewed vigor to update you loyal readers starting with a brief year-in-review!

Read on if you’d like to see what we were up to in 2018 (or just look at the nice pictures and try to spot a familiar face- that works too! We apologise in advance for the not-so-up-to-date pictures)

Goodbye Singapore 2018 – Jan

Taking place in January, the undisputed month-equivalent of Monday blues, our annual camp pulled together incoming freshmen for a refreshing 2 days of fun and games at Aloha Changi. Atop underlying currents of worry mixed in with inertia about entering not only the new year but also a new country, friendships were forged, housemates were scoped out and meaningful conversation was had. Personal anecdotes were tossed around the room, landing on the ears of freshmen eager to know what life in Adelaide would be like and just over one night the worries that were brought in were almost all dispelled. A key event, both informative and enjoyable, Goodbye Singapore will continue on with its 2019 edition so stay tuned for updates on that!

Trivarsity Student Welcome Reception (SWR) – Mar

A wonderful night of music, food and good company, the annual Trivarsity Student Welcome Reception (SWR) was one of the year’s most highly anticipated events. Kindy sponsored by the ever-giving Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU), this completely free event included a 2-course meal with free flow drinks to welcome new and returning Singaporean students to Adelaide. Set against the elegant backdrop of the River Torrens, it was the perfect kick-start to another school year for our students from University of Adelaide, Flinders University and University of South Australia!

SA Roadtrip – Apr

Oh no! School’s out (said no one ever). Admittedly, however, 2 weeks of break can look rather dreary without any activities. Fortunately, for our members, the mid-semester break was far from bleak with this (literal) pop of colour that was the SA Roadtrip! Paintball, frisbee, off-pitch karaoke in the car and a chance to get those #goldenhour pictures to show off to the world that you have a life outside of studying – yes please! Roadtrips are one of those things every Singaporean in Australia seems to have done or want to do and, well, why not? Long walks on the beach as the sun sets, windswept hair and carefree smiles – it’s about as fantastically cliche as it gets.

SA Potluck – May

One of our more laid-back events, featuring crowd favourites such as Uno, Cards Against Humanity and Mahjong in addition to the main focus and namesake of the event- a central, modest bazaar of foodstuffs both handmade and store-bought alike, this event definitely caters to all. This year, the potluck was held at the University of Adelaide Village Common Room – not the most aesthetic location, but definitely the most accessible and convenient for the lucky Singaporeans who were housed there. Food, games, comfortable couches and no dress code; all the makings of a homely , warm and cozy event.

Singapore National Day Celebrations (SNDC) – Aug

An annual Trivarsity effort, SNDC is a one-of-a-kind event organised for the sole purpose of bringing Singaporeans together to celebrate Singapore’s 53rd National Day. Each and every year, this event serves as a platform where new friendships can be forged among fellow Singaporeans against the backdrop of nostalgic National Day Song Sing-a-longs, shiok local food and even a lucky draw! It is undoubtedly the biggest and most meaningful event of the year, a not-to-be-missed night that’ll have you happily reminiscing of our little island home. With Flinders University as this year’s convener, SNDC was a hugely successful and enjoyable event for Singaporeans young and old alike in their home away from home.

Annual General Meeting – Oct

As the saying goes, all good things come to an end. 2018 was a wonderful year for the Singapore Association, doubtless due to the hard work of the committee behind these events but of course, with a new year comes a new committee and at the AGM in October was when this change took effect. A formal election process spanning the duration of 3 hours and following a speech-and-vote format was conducted and this saw the entry of some very capable new members into the committee, as well as the retaining of some very wise and experienced members! Congratulations to all in the newly elected committee and let’s hope for a stellar 2019 ahead!

If you’ve read this far, I’m thoroughly impressed and am immensely grateful that you chose to do so! Thank you for your support and do stay tuned for more exciting updates in the coming year!
